Sixty...Going on Seventy Five

Who's Who

The Nygreen Families Beverly and Glen Nygreen were married on June 15, 1940. With persons from every corner of their far-ranging friendships, they celebrated these wonderful sixty years on Saturday evening, June 17, 2000. Hosted by the Nygreens' son Ted, his wife and three daughters, the party was, according to one daughter, "the biggest do we've ever done."

Ted said he understood that sermons and ceremonies lost their audience after twenty minutes. (Phil Washburn smiled and said, "and sometimes before that".) Therefore was was time for only a few loving words - thoughtfully amplified so they could be heard in every corner of the Ted Nygreens' beautiful White Plains home.

Each granddaughter, pictured here with their parents and grandparents, told how Beverly and Glen had always "been there for them" from the earliest time they could remember. They also noted that their grandparents had been role models for them in many ways - love of family, love of learning, love of serving one's community.

The granddaughters also revealed the names by which they refer to their grandparents: Beverly is "Demsie" which evolved from early efforts to say "Dad's Mom"; Glen is "Grandaddy" or sometimes "G-Dad." When referring to the two of them together, it is "D & G."

Glen took the mike for a few moments to note that there was an additional cause for celebration - June 17 was the thirty-third wedding anniversary of the hosts, Ted and Nancy Nygreen. Glen also said he was looking forward to the next celebration - Beverly and Glen's seventh-fifth anniversary.

Although Beverly said she was concerned about having this celebration "because people will know how old I am," she had not a single gray hair to signal she might be more than the sixty years being celebrated. Glen said he thought the party was a great idea "so Ted and Nancy can meet all our wonderful friends."

To help guests expand their own friendships, everyone wore a large nametag - with names visible from several feet. If one chose to introduce oneself to others at the party one could meet:

  • Friends from Lehman College, including the former president and the person who succeeded Glen as Dean.
  • Edgemont neighbors, including a couple who had to excuse themselves to be sure all was going well at the Senior Youth Fellowship "Final Feast" occurring at their home.
  • Friends from Rotary, including those who squeezed in a "mini Rotary meeting" at the end of the evening.
  • Friends from the United Way of Scarsdale-Edgemont and Westchester/Putnam

Nothing seems to exhaust "D & G." They were in church on Sunday, June 18 to hear the call to the special corporate meeting to vote on the recommendation of the Search Committee Glen chairs. And the June 25 Bulletin Newsletter reveals Glen will be in our pulpit on July 9, sharing his experiences from a trip to Romania on behalf of the United Church of Christ.
